How to spruce up your bathroom without committing to a full renovation?

A bathroom renovation can be costly - in fact, it is the second most expensive room to renovate after a kitchen.

Bathroom design is something I have a lot of experience in and is also the one room I receive the most enquiries about.

Interior designers offer huge value in designing a bathroom. Costly mistakes can often be made if bathrooms are poorly designed so it is worth taking your time and doing it well.

I now offer MORE support with my ONLINE e design service. It is a simplified interior design package which will give you the technical design support might need for a fraction of the cost.

If you are doing a refurb yourself, I have put together 5 tips below to help your maximise your budget!

5 tips on how to make bathroom improvements without blowing the budget..

  1. Repurpose exisiting fixtures and fittings, use what you already have.

  2. Consider larger tiles where possible. You will save on the cost of labour as tiling can be costly.

  3. Spend your budget wisely. You can get decent quality taps, bath tubs and toilet pans. I find towel rails in particular harder to source and cheaper ones can look cheap. Spend the budget carefully on a few show stopper items instead.

  4. Choose a timeless finish. Finishes come and go, I would advise you choose a finish that you will love for the long haul and work the scheme around that.

    5. Undermounted baths will give a sense of grandeur and luxury. A small surround on your already existing or second hand undermount bath will cost less then a new fancy freestanding roll top bath tub.

Case Study: Devonshire Road

Michaela wanted a Morocco meets east London feel. We built a stud wall for the shower enclosure. Traditional Tadelakt plaster with rustic floor tiles by Claybrook Studio were used giving this small bathroom interior that rustic Moroccan feel.

And of course we used lots of plants!

Keeping costs down

  1. We repurposed existing sanitary wear including the shower thermostat and even the toilet but gave the overall aesthetic of the bathroom a facelift.

  2. We wanted to shape the mirror and create mood lighting. To do this and to keep costs down we used wall sconces instead to give a similar effect minus the expensive rewire costs.

  3. We used large 80cm tiles on the floor. In total only 5 tiles had to be laid on the floor
